Nespresso® Original vs Vertuo: what's the difference?

Nespresso® actually makes two different machine systems — Original and Vertuo — and they use completely different, non-interchangeable pods. Knowing which you have is essential before buying any capsules, compatible or otherwise. Here's the difference.

Nespresso® Original

The classic, long-running system. It uses the familiar cone/dome-shaped capsules and works by forcing high-pressure water through the pod to make an espresso or lungo. It's the system with the widest choice of pods — and the one that compatible pods are made for.

Nespresso® Vertuo

A newer system that uses larger, round, dome-coded capsules and a spinning "centrifusion" method to brew bigger cup sizes. Vertuo machines read a barcode on each pod — which makes them much harder for third parties to make compatible pods for.

Why it matters for compatible pods

Most compatible pods, including Torrié's, are made for Nespresso® Original machines. They won't work in a Vertuo machine. So before you buy, check which system you own — Original if it takes the classic cone-shaped capsules.
