How to descale your coffee machine (Nespresso & Dolce Gusto)
If your machine is running slowly, spluttering, or your coffee has started tasting a little flat or bitter, the culprit is almost always limescale — especially in hard-water areas. Descaling is quick, and it makes a real difference to both taste and the life of your machine.
How often should you descale?
As a rule of thumb, every 2–3 months, or more often in a hard-water area or if you use your machine heavily. Many machines have a warning light that tells you when it's due.
What you'll need
- A descaling solution (or follow your machine's manual — many suggest a specific product)
- Fresh water
- A large container to catch the water
- About 20 minutes
Step by step
- Empty the machine: remove any used pod and empty the drip tray and water tank.
- Mix the solution: add descaler to the water tank following the product's ratio, then top up with fresh water.
- Run it through: place your container under the spout and run the machine (no pod) so the solution flows through. Repeat until the tank is empty.
- Rinse thoroughly: refill with fresh water only and run at least two full tanks through to flush out any residue — this step matters, or your next coffee will taste of descaler.
- Reset the descale light if your machine has one (check the manual).
Why it's worth it
Descaling restores water flow and the right brewing temperature, which is what gives you a proper crema and full flavour. Clean machine + fresh, well-roasted coffee = the best cup.
