Compatible pods vs original brand: how much do you save?

If you own a Nespresso® or Dolce Gusto® machine, you don't have to buy the original-brand pods to use it. Compatible pods fit the same machine and often cost a fraction of the price — so how much do you actually save? Let's do the maths.

Why compatible pods are cheaper

You're not paying for the big brand's marketing and premium. A good compatible pod uses quality coffee — Torrié's are roasted in Portugal from beans selected at origin — but sells for much less because it isn't carrying a household-name price tag.

The savings add up fast

Original-brand capsules commonly sell for noticeably more per pod than compatible ones. Even a modest saving per pod becomes real money over a year. For example, if you drink two coffees a day, that's around 730 pods a year — so even a 15–20p saving per pod adds up to well over £100 a year, per coffee drinker, without changing your machine or your routine. Do you sacrifice quality?

You shouldn't. Cheap, stale compatible pods exist — but the good ones are freshly roasted from proper beans and hold up against the big brands in a blind taste.
