The story of Portuguese coffee (and why it tastes so good)

12 September 2026 · 4 min read

When people think of great coffee cultures they often think of Italy — but Portugal has one of Europe's richest and least-talked-about coffee traditions. It's a big part of why Torrié tastes the way it does.

A nation built on the daily bica

In Portugal, the morning bica (Lisbon's word for a short, intense espresso — a cimbalino in Porto) is a daily ritual, poured in historic cafés like Lisbon's A Brasileira, open since 1905 and once the haunt of the poet Fernando Pessoa. Coffee isn't a trend there; it's part of everyday life.

A seafaring coffee history

Portugal's coffee roots run deep. As a great seafaring nation, Portugal helped carry coffee across the world — famously establishing it in Brazil and cultivating it in Angola, origins that became renowned in their own right. It's no coincidence that those same origins appear in the Torrié range today.

Why roasting in Portugal matters

Roasting at source means inheriting all of that: generations of know-how, a taste for a fuller, richer cup, and techniques refined over decades. Torrié selects beans at origin, roasts them in Portugal, and ships them fresh — the same care that fills those Lisbon and Porto cafés every morning.

Taste it for yourself

From single-origin beans to Nespresso® and Dolce Gusto® compatible pods, every Torrié coffee carries that heritage. Read more on our story, or build a box and taste the difference — save up to 30% with free UK delivery.
