How to froth milk without a machine
Frothy, café-style milk doesn't need a fancy steam wand. Here are five ways to froth milk at home with kit you probably already own — perfect for turning a pod espresso into a proper latte or cappuccino.
1. The jar method (easiest)
Half-fill a jar with milk, screw the lid on tight, shake hard for 30–60 seconds, then take the lid off and microwave for 30 seconds. The foam rises and sets. No kit at all.
2. A handheld electric frother
These cost very little and do a brilliant job — warm the milk, then whizz for 20–30 seconds until foamy. The best-value upgrade if you make milky coffee often.
3. A French press / cafetière
Add warm milk, then pump the plunger up and down briskly for 30 seconds. It aerates the milk into a thick, even foam.
4. A whisk
Warm the milk in a pan and whisk vigorously (a balloon whisk or a small electric one). Simple, if a little slower.
5. Blender
Warm milk, blend for a few seconds. Great for making a larger batch for several drinks.
Tips for the best foam
Whole or barista milk froths best thanks to the fat and protein, but many plant milks (especially barista oat) work well too. Don't overheat — just below boiling is ideal. Then pull a strong shot and pour. Here's how to make a latte, cappuccino and flat white once your milk's ready.
