Ground coffee vs beans vs pods: which is right for you?
Whole beans, ground coffee or pods — they all make a good cup, but they suit very different people and routines. Here's how to work out which is right for you.
Whole beans: best flavour, most control
Beans ground fresh for each cup give you the best flavour and the most control — ideal if you have a bean-to-cup or espresso machine and enjoy the ritual. They're also the cheapest per cup. The trade-off is a little more effort and kit. Browse 1kg beans and our guide to the best beans for a bean-to-cup machine.
Ground coffee: a middle ground
Pre-ground coffee skips the grinder — convenient for cafetières, filters and some machines — but it loses freshness faster than whole beans once the bag is open. A decent compromise if you don't want a grinder but still want real coffee.
Pods: convenience and consistency
Pods win on ease and consistency: no grinding, no mess, no guesswork, and a perfect single serving every time. Ideal for busy mornings, mixed households and milky drinks. Explore Nespresso® and Dolce Gusto® compatible pods.
